Job Description

ADA is hiring a Senior Battery Engineer as part of our fast-moving cross-functional Advanced Development team.  The goal of Advanced Development work is to pursue innovative approaches to enhance the company’s product line.  The Senior Development Battery Engineer will identify, optimize, validate and release next generation materials, formulations, processing methods and cell designs. The Senior Development Battery Engineer will set a clear goal and time line of his/her challenging research items and coordinate with product development engineers, electrolyte engineers, process engineers, and business/marketing in order to develop products consistent with customer and manufacturing requirements.  The Senior Development Battery Engineer’s work will also include: leading the development of custom products that are based on new energy storage product materials and concepts, and developing completely new and unique product concepts that will surpass current performance requirements and goals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out materials, formulation, and design evaluations for new products or new generations of products, including active materials, additives, separator, and other inactive materials.

  • Carry out electrode design optimizations to achieve customer/market requirements on performance, safety, reliability, and cost.

  • Work closely with product development and manufacturing engineering to support the transfer of released designs to production.

  • Develop and validate component and assembly level specifications of electrochemical component materials and assemblies.

  • Develop characterization equipment and test methods for materials, components and cells.

  • Investigate cell reactions and conduct failure mode analysis to identify root causes and generate novel solutions.

  • Resident expert on science and models in details of battery materials, electrode formulation, and chemical formation mechanism.

  • Work with suppliers and strategic partners to exchange technical information and enable access to advanced research.

Supervisory Responsibility 

  • Coordinate the activities of technicians, test engineers, and peers.

  • Serve as a mentor to more junior members of the advanced development team.

  • Serve as consultant to other engineers on lithium ion battery materials and theory.

 

Areas of Independent Action 

  • Lead optimization activities on new formulations, materials, and cell designs.

  • Propose and evaluate new materials to meet company goals in ADA’s novel cell architecture.

  • Conduct literature research to stay current in developments for electrochemical materials and
    cells and apply relevant research to ADA’s research and development activities.

  • Work with suppliers to exchange technical information and enable access to advanced material and battery research.

  • Summarize, report on, and present research activities regularly.

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with product development and manufacturing engineering
    contributing to a positive, team-oriented, and high-quality work environment.



Qualifications

  • MS/PhD in Materials Science, Chemistry, Electrochemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent and 5+ years industry experience OR

  • BS in Materials Science, Chemistry, Electrochemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent and 8+ years’ experience in Li-ion batteries Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Electrochemical Engineering, or equivalent.

  • Extensive knowledge of the fundamentals of cell lithium ion battery materials, components, performance, impedance, cell testing/data analysis, and failure modes.

  • Working knowledge of analytical equipment used in lithium ion industries.

  • Skilled in designing experiments to develop new materials and products.

  • Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to combine theory with empirical observation.

  • Ability to interact effectively with suppliers, partners, vendors, and colleagues.

  • Self-motivated, persistent, hands-on, and results-oriented.

  • Strong written and oral communication.

  • Ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment.

  • High degree of professionalism and maturity with good judgment.

Additional Information

Physical and Environmental Standards

  • Capable of working in low moisture dry room environment: < 1.0% Relative Humidity (-50°C dew point).

  • Capable of wearing clean room attire when working in dry room environment: face mask, hair net, safety glasses, gloves, coverall suit and shoe covers.

  • Limited travel will be required in support of customer discussions, supplier discussions, and relevant conference attendance.

Research and Development Technician

ADA is looking to fill an R&D Technician position at our Littleton, CO location – preference will be given to candidates with prior experience in battery/ultracapacitor R&D and/or manufacturing. The selected individual will contribute to research and development and product development, and/or manufacturing production in support of the energy storage program area. This includes but is not limited to batteries, supercapacitors and hybrids energy storage systems. Efforts will support a broad spectrum of research and development activities (primarily government contracts), new product development, process improvement for experimental / existing products, and lab operations and maintenance. The selected individual will be responsible for (but not limited to) the following:

  • Prepare / synthesize experimental materials or processing techniques and specifications with guidance from scientists or engineers.

  • Assist in the development of specifications for raw materials, sub-assemblies and finished products.

  • Document attributes and preparation instructions.

  • Coordinate activities including materials procurement, lab preparation, sample production and data collection.

  • Responsible for data collection, observations and documentation of test results.

  • Calibrate and maintain the operation of instruments, equipment and lab facilities.

  • Maintain lab areas and equipment in clean and operable conditions. Assist in maintaining lab supplies.

  • Maintains, records and reconciles expense receipts and purchase orders.

  • Responsible for shipping and receiving of lab supplies, sub-assemblies and finished goods according to requests and instructions.

Salary:

This is a full time position. Typical hours are 8:00 AM-5:00 PM with occasional overtime anticipated.

Starting pay range is $16.00/hour to $18.00 /hour depending upon experience.

Relationships:

This position will initially interact with a variety of technical support and other positions.

Minimum Requirements:

GED or H.S Diploma (Bachelors and/or associates degrees desirable)

Qualifications

Prior experience as a technician in an energy storage technology/battery manufacturing company is Highly Desirable

  • Associate’s degree (minimum), Bachelor’s degree (preferred).

  • 1 – 5 years related experience.

  • Physical science degree (preferred). Co-Op, Internship or part time experience as student will be considered towards experience.

  • Prior experience in composites, coatings and nanomaterials are highly desirable.

  • Prior wet chemistry lab experience is highly desirable.

  • Prior experience with thin films, inks, solids and/or liquid composites comprised from fillers and/or nanomaterials is highly desirable.

  • Excellent communication skills are mandatory.

  • Intermediate computer skills and proficiency with common software packages / operating systems such as Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint is highly desirable.

  • Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail and a willingness and ability to multi-task.

  • Willingness and ability to calibrate and operate laboratory instruments, and lab and pilot-scale production equipment such as coaters, mixers and test equipment

Work Experience:

Not less than 2 years of technician experience.
