Job Description

ADA is hiring a Senior Battery Engineer as part of our fast-moving cross-functional Advanced Development team.  The goal of Advanced Development work is to pursue innovative approaches to enhance the company’s product line.  The Senior Development Battery Engineer will identify, optimize, validate and release next generation materials, formulations, processing methods and cell designs. The Senior Development Battery Engineer will set a clear goal and time line of his/her challenging research items and coordinate with product development engineers, electrolyte engineers, process engineers, and business/marketing in order to develop products consistent with customer and manufacturing requirements.  The Senior Development Battery Engineer’s work will also include: leading the development of custom products that are based on new energy storage product materials and concepts, and developing completely new and unique product concepts that will surpass current performance requirements and goals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Carry out materials, formulation, and design evaluations for new products or new generations of products, including active materials, additives, separator, and other inactive materials.

  • Carry out electrode design optimizations to achieve customer/market requirements on performance, safety, reliability, and cost.

  • Work closely with product development and manufacturing engineering to support the transfer of released designs to production.

  • Develop and validate component and assembly level specifications of electrochemical component materials and assemblies.

  • Develop characterization equipment and test methods for materials, components and cells.

  • Investigate cell reactions and conduct failure mode analysis to identify root causes and generate novel solutions.

  • Resident expert on science and models in details of battery materials, electrode formulation, and chemical formation mechanism.

  • Work with suppliers and strategic partners to exchange technical information and enable access to advanced research.

Supervisory Responsibility 

  • Coordinate the activities of technicians, test engineers, and peers.

  • Serve as a mentor to more junior members of the advanced development team.

  • Serve as consultant to other engineers on lithium ion battery materials and theory.


Areas of Independent Action 

  • Lead optimization activities on new formulations, materials, and cell designs.

  • Propose and evaluate new materials to meet company goals in ADA’s novel cell architecture.

  • Conduct literature research to stay current in developments for electrochemical materials and
    cells and apply relevant research to ADA’s research and development activities.

  • Work with suppliers to exchange technical information and enable access to advanced material and battery research.

  • Summarize, report on, and present research activities regularly.

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with product development and manufacturing engineering
    contributing to a positive, team-oriented, and high-quality work environment.


  • MS/PhD in Materials Science, Chemistry, Electrochemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent and 5+ years industry experience OR

  • BS in Materials Science, Chemistry, Electrochemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent and 8+ years’ experience in Li-ion batteries Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Electrochemical Engineering, or equivalent.

  • Extensive knowledge of the fundamentals of cell lithium ion battery materials, components, performance, impedance, cell testing/data analysis, and failure modes.

  • Working knowledge of analytical equipment used in lithium ion industries.

  • Skilled in designing experiments to develop new materials and products.

  • Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to combine theory with empirical observation.

  • Ability to interact effectively with suppliers, partners, vendors, and colleagues.

  • Self-motivated, persistent, hands-on, and results-oriented.

  • Strong written and oral communication.

  • Ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment.

  • High degree of professionalism and maturity with good judgment.

Additional Information

Physical and Environmental Standards

  • Capable of working in low moisture dry room environment: < 1.0% Relative Humidity (-50°C dew point).

  • Capable of wearing clean room attire when working in dry room environment: face mask, hair net, safety glasses, gloves, coverall suit and shoe covers.

  • Limited travel will be required in support of customer discussions, supplier discussions, and relevant conference attendance.

Position Responsibilities:

·   Participate in research on new electrode and electrolyte materials for high-performance energy storage devices with high energy, high power, and long lifetime.

·   Work as part of a team of engineers/technicians under the direct supervision of senior engineers to contribute towards the development of new materials and improved processing.

·   Develop experimental protocols, conduct research, analyze data, and prepare progress reports.

·   Perform laboratory-scale trials to help refine materials fabrication and processing procedures.

·   Perform (and/or analyze) morphological, elemental, mechanical, electrical, and thermal tests of materials.

·   Fabricate and test laboratory cells and industrial prototypes.

·   Communicate results of work through effective documentation, technical writing, and presentations.


Qualifications and Requirements:

·   A B.S. or M.S. in Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, or an equivalent degree with 5 to 10 years experience is preferred.

·   Hands-on experience with electrochemical characterization techniques (e.g., cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and cycling experimentation) and energy storage device fabrication and testing.

·   Detail-oriented personality with a strong desire to learn and a can-do attitude.

·   Responsible and self-motivated, and able to work closely with senior chemists and engineers for guidance while able to work independently to accomplish goals.

·   Strong interpersonal skills and teamwork skills.

·   Self-motivated and assertive with the ability to carry out multiple, new and/or complex tasks.

·   Strong written and verbal communication skills and computer skills.

·   US Citizenship mandatory or permanent residency required.
